Polish Citizenship for Foreigners — Naturalisation & Conditions
Polish citizenship opens access to civil rights, freedom of movement throughout the entire European Union and legal stability unavailable to residence permit holders. The path to a Polish passport is possible for many foreigners — and we are happy to help you achieve it.
Ways to Obtain Polish Citizenship as a Foreigner
Conferral of citizenship by the President of Poland
The President of Poland may confer Polish citizenship on any foreigner who submits an appropriate application. This is a path without a formal requirement for length of stay in Poland — the decision rests solely with the President. In practice, it requires several years of legal residence and strong ties with Poland.
Recognition as a citizen by the Voivode
This path requires meeting specific statutory conditions, including legal residence for the required time and sufficient knowledge of the Polish language. It is intended for, among others:
- Foreigners legally residing in Poland for at least 3 years on the basis of a permanent or EU resident permit
- Spouses of Polish citizens legally residing in Poland for at least 2 years on the basis of a permanent residence permit
- Foreigners holding refugee status and residing in Poland for at least 2 years on the basis of a permanent residence permit
- Minors born on the territory of Poland without citizenship
Citizenship by operation of law
A child acquires Polish citizenship by operation of law if at least one parent is a Polish citizen — regardless of the place of birth.
Restoration of citizenship
Persons who lost Polish citizenship before 1 January 1999 in connection with acquiring foreign citizenship may submit a declaration of restoration of citizenship.
